Poddo Pukur Road, Kolkata

Shri Nathji arrived in Calcutta in 1937 and stayed with Shri Ram Saran Das at Paddu Pooker Road. Now this Shri Ram Sharan Das was a prosperous businessman from Rawalpindi, Punjab. (Now in Pakistn) and  had a large general merchant’s shop.  there. He had an establishment in Calcutta also. Poddo Pukur Road is in Bhawanipore area is now known as Lala Lajpat Rai Sarani ,kolkata -700020. Bhowanipore is among the oldest localities of South Kolkata. Bhowanipore is perhaps the first 'posh' south Kolkata neighbourhood, in the early 19th century. It consists of well-known and posh localities like Elgin Road, Gokhale Road, Woodburn Park, Bakulbagan Road, Harish Mukherjee Road, Beltala Road, Townshend Road and parts of Chakraberia and Lansdowne. The locality has an illustrious past and abounds with stories of great men and women who lived here. In 1940’s this area was a posh residential area with Hindu majority. In these photos of Poddo Pooker Road we can see that his locality has not changed much since the time Shri Nathji was here, in Calcutta. The old famous sweet shop of Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick  established in1885, is still here.  Information and photos about this area are provided by Deepa Das, a devotee of Shri Nathji from Salt Lake, Kolkata.
