Rajahmundry



Shri Nathji came to Rajahmundry in 1949 at the invitation of His devotee Narmada Hathi and her husband, Shri L.G. Hathi, who was a timber merchant. The above photograph of Shri Nathji was taken when He had visited the city in 1949. Some time after Shri Nathji's visit, There was a great flood in the city and the flood waters reached the house of Narmada Hathi. She prayed to Shri Nathji for help and the flood was miraculously stopped short of her house and the city was saved from major damage.
 Rajahmundry or Rajamahendri is an historical City of Andhra Pradesh state in India. It is situated 400 kilometres (249 mi) east of the state capital, Hyderabad, on the banks of the River Godavari. Known as the Cultural Capital of Andhra Pradesh, Rajahmundry is noted for its versatile Vedic culture and intellect. It is one of the oldest cities of India. It is the fourth largest by area and eighth most populous city in Andhra Pradesh. City Population is 343,903 (Census 2011).
The City origins can be traced back to the rule of the Chalukya king Rajaraja Narendra who reigned around 1022 A.D, after whom it is named Rajamahendri or Rajamahendravaram. Remains of 11th century palaces and fort walls still exist. Over time, The city was ruled by many dynasties including the Chalukhyas, the Kakatiyas, and the Reddys. In the eighteenth century, it came under French Rule. Finally, the British took over and named it Rajajmundry.
Rajahmundry was one of the biggest cities in South India, during the times of the British. River Godavari flows through the west of Rajahmundry. There are two very long bridges over Godavari running over 3 kms. which connect the city. Rajahmundry is also a major Hindu pilgrimage sites, with a number of temples like the Kotilingalu (10 million Sivalingas) temple on the bank of Godavari. It hosts holy congregations called Pushkaram held once every 12 years and considered auspicious to take sin-ridding holy dips—with the last in August 2003, when around 34 million are said to have taken the bath. Place of interest here are Gowthami Ghat, Godavari Bund , Pushkhar Ghat, Sivalingam at Pushkhar Ghat, Markandeyaswamy Temple, Raghavendraswamy Temple, and P.V. Narasimharao park
Rajahmundry has many traditional pen-making shops where people can place order for a variety of vintage fountain pens in bulk. Rajahmundry's Cloth Market is One of the largest markets in India with many Co-operative handloom houses providing fine quality sarees as well as Men's wear. Rajahmundry is one of the largest bullion markets in India which consists hundreds of Gold and Silver shops.
