Count Alexander von Hoyos was born in Rijeka,
Croatia on 13 May 1876 into the House of Hoyos, a
noble family that hailed originally from Spain, but which had immigrated to
Austria around 1525. 13 May 1876 – 20 October 1937, was an Austro-Hungarian
diplomat who played a major role during the July Crisis
while serving as chef de cabinet of the Foreign Minister at
the outbreak of the World
War I in 1914. He was the grandson of Robert Whitehead,
the inventor of the torpedo.
Following an expedition to China with his uncle, who served as British chargé
d'affaires in Tokyo, Count von Hoyos started his diplomatic career as a
provisional attaché at the legation in Beijing in
1900. In April 1912, he was appointed to serve as chef de cabinet to
the Imperial Foreign Minister Count von Berchtold.
Shri Nathji’s little book
“The Rays of light was given to Court Alexander Hoyos by Mr. Ramgopal Mehta
during his stay in Austria. After reading that book he wrote a letter to Shri
Nathji I greatly
liked the way he ended his letter with the words – In
this letter he stated that he read the Rays of light with very great interest
and pleasure and after a few weeks reached a state of happiness and inward
joy., which you described in Rays of Light. A new world of peace, content and
happiness was opened to me.
(Please forgive me for
having troubled your spiritual meditations by this letter, and believe me in
deepest respect.
Your Holiness’ Obedient
Servant,
Count Alexander Hoyos. )
This shows the apt humility
of this man. He was so modest despite being a Count and a minister in Austria.
The letter which Shri Nathji
wrote back to Count Alexander Hoyos reveals the essence of all spirituality in
the world. This letter is so beautiful,
elaborate and full of revelations of the deepest secrets of God Head
that it can only be written for a man who is worthy of possessing such divine
secrets. This is an indication of Count Alexander Hoyos’s intellect and his
love for Shri Nathji. This letter was
latter printed in the booklet “The Inspired Epistle”. A beautiful forward of
this letter is written by a devotee Shri Kasinath Saikia, who had the booklet
printed in Shillong on 7th July 1937. Shri Nathji had also stayed in
Shillong with Kashinath Sakia who was very proud of his good driver. To sever
the pride of His devotee Shri Nathji made the car fall down a cliff while
riding it with Kashinath Sakia. Kashinath miraculously was unhurt but Shree
Nathji lost a tooth, This lost tooth always reminded Shree Nathji of his devotee Kashinath Sakia.
The letter which Shri Nathji
wrote to Count Alexander Hoyos, hem in
intense spiritual revelations, which I am not worthy of comprehending.
All I can say is that they can take one to the pinnacle of Godliness. I request all to read it on the pages of the
Maharagrath and infer their own spiritual understanding depending on their
individual taste and capacity.
The year when Count
Alexander Hoyos corresponded with Shri Nathji and received this letter, he was
in the last stages of his life. He was 61 years of age. After the fall of the
Habsburg empire, he retired from public service and spend his time in theosophy
and spiritual studies. When we study this letter which he received from Shri
Nathji we can understand that all
spiritual truths lay open before him. He attained the height of peace and
spiritual bliss and thus had no more desires left to seek in this world. That’s
why he peacefully left the world on 20 October 1937 in in Schwertberg.
