Shri R.L. Tuli was a prominent Indian banker who served as the General Manager of the Punjab National Bank (PNB) during the mid-20th century. During his career, he played a vital role in navigating the banking sector's complex challenges in post-independence India.
He served as the General Manager of PNB (with the Head Office then located at Parliament Street, New Delhi) during crucial periods in the late 1950s and 1960s. He handled highly complex post-partition cross-border legalities, including the transfer and resolution of safe-deposit lockers belonging to displaced persons left behind in Pakistan branches after the 1947 partition
He served as a prominent council member and representative for PNB at the Indian Institute of Bankers (now IIBF) from 1964 to 1969
Beyond individual banking, Shri R.L. Tuli served as the Chairman of the PHDCCI (PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry). Notably, during his leadership tenure at the Chamber, the Indian rupee was devalued on June 5, 1966. Tuli actively advocated for this move at the time, viewing it as a necessary economic step to control inflation and rectify balance-of-payments issues, while proactively creating committees to help industries manage the transition
