Wheeler's Club in Meerut

This is an old painted photo of Wheeler's Club in Meerut, were Shri Nathji stayed with His family for one month on March 1956, when on the way from Delhi to Dehradoon. While comming from Delhi, as it had already become dark, Shri Nathji decided to break journey at Meerut. Finding a place for the night was a very difficult matter. However, Shri Nathji with his uncanny ability was able to discover Wheler Club which was a place reserved for Army Officers and their families. The manager was so touched by Shri Nathji’s personality that he offered him a suite of two rooms for the night.

Shri Nathji liked the place so much that he decided to continue staying there for a month at least. Mateshwari and the boys were enjoying the beautiful surroundings, the well-kept lawns, the tidy club buildings, the dining hall and large ballroom, room etc.
Everything had a British flavour to it, and was spic and span. Even the food was agreeable. There was a large bathtub in the bathroom with running hot and cold water. It was here that Shri Nathji met the Nawab of Sardanna and his english wife.
Shri Nath ji and his family liked this place so much that next year is 1957 they also came to Wheler Club to spend their winter holidays. Mateshwari’s health had begun to show a marked improvement in the warm and sunny atmosphere at Meerut. Humanity would always owe a debt of gratitude to Wheler Club for restoring Mateshwari to good health.

In my effort to locate an old photograph of that building, I found this painted photo on an old postcard. After Shri Nathji stayed at the club it regained it's formal prestige and glory. This oldest club of Meerut is still operational and can be booked for parities and functions.
The address of Wheeler's Club is 2P43+3GG, Jattiwara, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh 250001
Now also the club has retained a large part of its origional  building and its old charm. I have also given its current photos

Priya Nath Mehta - Dearest Siddharta! You are an amazing biographer and have done more than I could ever do in bringing back the past history of HH Shri Nathji! Yes, I remember Wheler Club in Meerut where I and my brother as children with our mother and HH

  1. I find your website fascinating! Please note that I have no sympathy for Britain's colonial occupation of India. However, just last night, I did find the army discharge papers for my Great Uncle Sergeant (spelled Serjeant then I think) Sidney Herbert Stewart - my father's uncle and namesake. He gave this club as his contact address on the discharge form. He had been in what was then The Rifle Brigade (think it was renamed the Prince Consort's Own Rifle Brigade after WW I). In the war he was attached to the 8th Gurkhas. It seems like a very beautiful and fascinating place. Sincerely, David Stewart
