Jabakusum Hair Oil

Shri Nathji was very fond of Jabakusum Hair oil and said it was a brain tonic. In later years when the company stopped production of this oil and it was not available, Shri Nathji was still able to procure a bottle of that oil. Now this famous and legendry hair oil from Bengal was manufactured by C.k. Sen & Cop Ltd, at 34 Chittaranjan Avenue, Kolkata. The success behind this hair oil lies in the ancient formulae of Jabakusum. This Herbal Hair Oil contains extract of Jasund - Hibiscus, a beautiful purple colour flower, which is used as a natural source for hair care since ancient times.
This was immensely popular hair oil which was also advertised widely. It was the first hair oil to publish an advertisement in the first newspaper in English in India, which started published from Kolkata in 1780 - Bengal Gazette. (I have posted the photo of the first advertisement of this oil in the 19th century- It's the photo on the left) Jabakusum Hair Oil was the first hair oil brand in Asia to make an film advertisement which was made by Hirala Sen, the first Indian to use film for advertising purposes. Kaushik Roy used to come in Jabakusum hair oil advertisement which become legendary in the early days of Indian television. The production of this oil was discontinued perhaps due to scarce and pricy availability of Hibiscus flower. But now we see that Jabakusum hair oil is becoming very popular and a lot of companies are manufacturing it. Though I am not sure if there quality is same as that made by C.K. Sen which Shri Nathji used. But as God Himself had advocated the benefits of this oil, Jabakusum in very popular and a lot of brands lave launched this product. There was also this news the Emami Group, which acquired Zandu Pharma for Rs 700 crore last year, is also eyeing Bengal’s once-popular brands Jabakusum and is in talks with C.K. Sen to acquire it.
